Who it's for

Built for everyone on the erg.

Gym, club, school, or training on your own — The 500m is one national leaderboard with a place on the start line for each.

For gyms

I.Run it as a throwdown.

Every affiliated gym gets a promo code for members, and your gym name shows next to each athlete's time on the national leaderboard. Rally the crew and see who's quickest by Sept 14.

For rowing clubs

II.Benchmark the off-season.

A verified winter test of your squad's base, one week out from NZ Masters Champs at Karapiro. Your club name sits next to every member's time on the leaderboard.

For schools

III.Set the crew's winter target.

Junior U19 Male and Female divisions. Coaches register the whole crew and set a time-trial target on the road to Maadi 2027. We work with the coach, not around them.

For individuals

IV.Just you and the monitor.

No club, no problem. Race solo from any Concept2 RowErg, anywhere in the country. One verified 500m, your name on the national leaderboard.

Gym, club, school or solo — your start line is the same.

Will a gym or a rowing club claim the top spots?

Which functional-fitness gym will be on top? Can the U19s beat the Masters? Will the North Island or the South Island produce the quickest 500m athletes? The leaderboard will reveal all — and we'll share comparisons and head-to-heads along the way.

Nine days. One national leaderboard. Your time on the board.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

Can I race more than once? +

Yes. Unlimited attempts during the window. Only your fastest verified time counts. Most athletes go twice — once to set a baseline, once to take a real swing.

What monitor do I need? +

Any Concept2 monitor works — PM3, PM4, PM5, or newer. You’ll submit a photo of the monitor like everyone else. You don’t need the latest model to race or place.

How is verification handled? +

Every result is reviewed by event officials before it hits the leaderboard. Top-10 results in every division get a full review: PM screenshot + named witness. Everyone else submits a PM screenshot + named witness, with a 10% random spot-check. Same rigour you’d expect from a regatta result, no more friction than you’re already used to.

Why September? Isn't water season starting? +

Sept 5–13 sits one week before NZ Masters Champs at Karapiro — a natural taper-week benchmark. For school crews building toward Maadi 2027, it’s a winter checkpoint right when programmes are setting base targets.

Is there a Junior division for school crews? +

Yes — separate Junior U19 Male and Junior U19 Female divisions. Coaches can register a full crew and use it as a winter time-trial benchmark; each athlete appears on the leaderboard for their division. We work with the coach, not around them.

Can my club take part together? +

Yes — everyone enters as an individual in their own division, and your club name sits next to each member’s verified time on the leaderboard. Grab a free promo code for your members (email oceaniaergleague@gmail.com). There’s no separate team event for The 500m, but you can still rally the whole squad and compare splits.

What's the refund policy? +

Your $25 entry is non-refundable once paid — it goes toward platform, prize, and operations costs that are locked in ahead of the event.

If you’re injured or can’t compete, we’ll do our best to transfer your entry to another athlete free of charge (email oceaniaergleague@gmail.com), though we can’t guarantee transfers close to the race window.

If we have to cancel the event, you’ll receive a full refund.

What data do you hold on me? +

Email, name, date of birth (used only to assign the right division), gender (race category), gym affiliation, and a link to wherever you log your rows. Your dob and email are never shown publicly. Name and gym affiliation appear next to your verified time on the leaderboard.

1. Eligibility

1.1 Open to any athlete who can access a Concept2 rowing erg with a PM monitor (PM3 or newer).

1.2 Athletes under 13 years require a parent / guardian to register on their behalf.

2. Equipment

2.1 Standard indoor rowing erg only. Slides and dynamic ergs are permitted, but the time is recorded under the same division.

2.2 Damper setting is at athlete discretion. No drag-factor minimum.

3. The Race

3.1 One distance: 500 metres.

3.2 Any number of attempts permitted during the race window — only the athlete’s fastest verified time counts.

3.3 Each attempt must be a clean, standalone 500m piece — not a split from a longer workout.

4. Verification

4.1 The submission requires a clear photograph of the PM monitor showing distance, time, split, and stroke rate, taken at the end of the piece.

4.2 Top-10 results in each division receive a full review (screenshot + named witness).

4.3 All other results submit a screenshot + named witness, with a 10% random spot-check.

4.4 Witnesses must be 16+, present at the row, and provide name + email so we can confirm if needed.

4.5 Suspected impossible times (e.g. better than the World Record) trigger automatic review and may require video evidence.

5. Divisions

5.1 Twelve divisions: Open M/F, Masters M/F by 5-year bands 40–44 / 45–49 / 50–54 / 55+, and Junior U19 M/F.

5.2 Age divisions use age on race day (5 September 2026).

5.3 Athletes may enter only one division.

6. Conduct

6.1 By entering, the athlete consents to a follow-up if a result is challenged.

6.2 Be respectful in all communications. Harassment of athletes, witnesses, or officials results in disqualification and forfeit of fee.

6.3 The Operations team’s verification decisions are final, subject to appeal in writing within 48 hours of the decision.

7. Prizes

7.1 Division winners receive a prize. Prize details will be announced before 1 September 2026, likely earlier.

8. Privacy

8.1 We store the minimum data needed to run the event: email, name, date of birth, gender, and gym affiliation.

8.2 Date of birth, email, and witness emails are never displayed publicly.

8.3 Name and gym affiliation appear next to verified times on the leaderboard.

9. Refunds

9.1 Injury / illness: we’ll endeavour to transfer your entry to another athlete free of charge (email oceaniaergleague@gmail.com), but cannot guarantee transfers in the lead-up to the race window.

9.2 Event cancellation by the Operations team for reasons outside athlete control: full refund.

10. Disputes

10.1 Athletes may dispute a verification decision in writing to oceaniaergleague@gmail.com within 48 hours.

10.2 Disputes are reviewed by the Operations team.

10.3 The dispute decision is final.
